Our Teacher

Our Teacher

Born in 1946, Shi Wuling grew up north of New York City. Having previously studied Buddhism when young, she learned of the Pure Land school through the teachings of Master Chin Kung in 1994. She went to the Dallas Buddhist Association for further study and practice, and it was in Dallas that she became a nun. She received ordination in Taiwan in 1997.

Venerable Wuling went to Singapore in 1998 and remained there for three years. During that time, she served on the translation group, Silent Voices, and as a lecturer. She moved to Australia in 2001 and has been the centre's Teacher since 2002. She now also serves as our director.

Venerable has spoken abroad in Canada, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, and the United States. In 2001, she spoke at the Premier of Queensland's Multi-faith Gathering to memorialize the 11th September attacks and was a guest speaker at the Premier's Multi-faith Gathering on Australia Day.

Abroad, in 2002, she was a guest speaker at McGill University in Canada, participated in TriCycle Magazine's "Change Your Mind Day" in New York City, and had an eight-city speaking tour of Canada and the United States. On the International Day of Peace, 21 September 2003, she participated in programs held by Griffith University Multi-Faith Centre and Brisbane City Council. In 2006, she was invited to Malaysia for a month-long lecture tour.

Having returned to the USA in 2003 for an extended stay, Venerable will continue her work from both the Amitabha Buddhist Retreat Centre and Indiana, USA.

Her work includes the books path to peace, Awaken to the Buddha Within, and In One Lifetime: Pure Land Buddhism. She edited and contributed to Heart of a Buddha. Several of her talks are available for downloading here.
