Our Teacher
Born in
1946, Shi Wuling grew up north of New York City. Having
previously studied Buddhism when young, she learned of
the Pure Land school through the teachings of Master
Chin Kung in 1994. She went to the Dallas Buddhist
Association for further study and practice, and it was
in Dallas that she became a nun. She received ordination
in Taiwan in 1997.
Venerable Wuling went to Singapore in 1998 and remained
there for three years. During that time, she served on
the translation group, Silent Voices, and as a lecturer.
She moved to Australia in 2001 and has been the centre's
Teacher since 2002. She now also serves as our director.
Venerable has spoken abroad in Canada, Malaysia,
Singapore, Taiwan, and the United States. In 2001, she
spoke at the Premier of Queensland's Multi-faith
Gathering to memorialize the 11th September attacks and
was a guest speaker at the Premier's Multi-faith
Gathering on Australia Day.
Abroad, in 2002, she was a guest speaker at McGill
University in Canada, participated in TriCycle
Magazine's "Change Your Mind Day" in New York City, and
had an eight-city speaking tour of Canada and the United
States. On the International Day of Peace, 21 September
2003, she participated in programs held by Griffith
University Multi-Faith Centre and Brisbane City Council.
In 2006, she was invited to Malaysia for a month-long
lecture tour.
Having returned to the USA in 2003 for an extended stay,
Venerable will continue her work from both the Amitabha Buddhist
Retreat Centre and Indiana, USA.
Her work includes the books path to peace,
Awaken to the Buddha Within, and
In One Lifetime: Pure Land Buddhism. She edited and
contributed to
Heart of a Buddha.
